Competitive Landscape

Currently all acrylic acid is produced from petroleum through propylene. The largest global producers are BASF, Dow, Arkema, Nippon Shokubai Formosa, Jiansu Jurong Chemical, LG Chemical, Mitsubishi Chem, and Shanghai Huayi.

Some organizations are known to be working on bio-based routes. None of these routes are yet commercially viable.

Pricing risks: Since propylene cost depends on petroleum, it is possible that the relative cost of renewable raw materials vs. petroleum could rise, adversely affecting SGA's competitive position.

Competitive risks: One of the other bio-based routes could have a technology breakthrough. However, after decades of research, these routes are still economically noncompetitive.
